We Did It! Pinewoods Recognized for Contributions to Students Against Hunger Campaign
We are excited to share that Pinewoods was recognized for our incredible efforts in the Students Against Hunger 2024 campaign! On February 4th, our students and staff gathered together on the green in the back of the school as a few representatives from the Food Bank of Central & Eastern North Carolina presented us with a beautiful plaque, honoring us as the Durham Branch Winner of this year’s campaign!
This amazing achievement would not have been possible without the support of our families, students, and staff. In November, we came together to collect food donations and raise funds to help fight food insecurity in our community. Thanks to your generosity, Pinewoods raised $880 in donations. Through community partnerships, those funds were stretched to provide 4,400 meals (since every $1 equals 5 meals). Even more exciting—because we participated during a double match, our efforts had double the impact, bringing our total to 8,800 meals! Additionally, we collected 1,902 pounds of food, which is equivalent to 1,585 meals. In total, we helped provide an amazing 10,585 meals with the double match!
As Ms. Brittany Palacioz, our Lower Elementary Lead Guide & Elementary Level Chair, shared, “We are incredibly proud to be recognized by the Food Bank of Central & Eastern North Carolina as the Durham branch winner of the Students Against Hunger campaign. This achievement reflects the hard work and commitment of our students, families, and faculty. We believe in fostering kindness, responsibility, and compassion in our children, and this campaign has been an excellent opportunity to support a cause that aligns with those values.”
This is truly extraordinary work, and we couldn’t be more proud of our Pinewoods community. To keep this achievement front and center, the Guides will be using these numbers to create math problems with the golden beads, helping our students understand the real-world impact of their actions. The plaque will also take turns living in each classroom, reminding our students of what we’ve accomplished together and the importance of helping others.
Thank you again to everyone who participated—whether by donating food, fundraising, or spreading the word. We are so proud of what we’ve achieved together and excited to continue making a positive impact in our community!
